why do people hate birkenstocks so much

i've never owned a pair

they just seem like regular-ass shoes to me

but there always seems to be a really huge negative visceral reaction to their mention ... are they just one of those things that's 'cool' to hate (Coldplay, Long John Silvers, Khakis, etc...)?
